What is the Seeing Through the Haze?

Seeing Through the Haze is an educational resource to equip students in upper primary and secondary school with the critical thinking skills to create change for a smoke and vape-free future. Structured as a three-part learning sequence, Seeing Through the Haze is evidence-based, curriculum aligned and free to access for teachers and health educators.

Seeing Through the Haze is structured as a three-part learning sequence. The Student Resource includes a range of activities that can be selected, across three modules:

  1. Getting the Facts - learn the foundational knowledge and skills required to understand vaping and its impacts on health.
  2. See Through the Haze - examine how the marketing and advertising of vaping purposefully targets young people and the tactics used by industry.
  3. Making Change - the culmination of the resource which brings together students’ knowledge and skills to create a campaign that can be applied within their school and local community.

Importantly, through these modules, students also gain an understanding of how social factors influence decision making; investigate vaping cessation support options; and identify local community organisations and professionals who they can work with to create healthier environments.

To support the delivery of Seeing Through the Haze, you will receive the Seeing Through the Haze Teaching Guide. Designed to be used alongside the Student Resource, the teaching guide explains the structure of the student resources and contains lesson planning and delivery suggestions, curriculum links and answers to the activities. Possible extension activities are also included should you wish to deepen student learning further.

Quick vaping facts

  • The number of 14–17-year-old Australians who vape has risen almost 12-fold in just four years (during the period 2018-2022)1
  • Teenagers aged 12-17 years who have never smoked cigarettes but vaped are 5 times more likely to start smoking cigarettes2
  • In 2022, the Victorian Quitline received calls from clients as young as 12 years seeking help to stop vaping
  • Aerosol produced by vapes is not water vapor, but a mixture of corrosive chemicals that are harmful to delicate lung tissue
  • Many vapes contain nicotine despite this not being listed in the ingredients
  • Vaping has been linked to anxiety disorders, higher perceived stress levels, depressive symptoms and suicidal ideation in adolescents
  • School-based prevention programs protect and prevent use and help build health literacies which are positively related to better health outcomes
  • Legal access to therapeutic vaping products for people under 18 years varies across Australia: some jurisdictions prohibit sales, others require a prescription from a medical or nurse practitioner, and others restrict dispensing of such products to minors or their parents on their behalf (regardless of a prescription). For detailed guidance, refer to the Therapeutic Goods Administration's (TGA) web page on prescribing and dispensing vaping products to patients under 18
